CloseThe Merino Wool Story
The merino sheep, originally a native of Southern Spain where the warm climate was ideal for the growth of its fine soft fleece, now flourishes principally in the ambient climate of Australia, Argentina, and South Africa.
The breed was improved over the centuries, most notably by King Louis XVI of France who loved the soft, luxurious quality of its wool.
The fine merino wool is highly prized for its supple and gentle handle; its silky long fibers giving warmth with lightness. It is unrivaled in its ability to wick, absorb, and evaporate moisture. It is a natural insulator that keeps you warm in the winter, yet cool in the summer.
It is said that merino wool first came to Ireland in the holds of Spanish and French frigates smuggling brandy, wines, and other contraband to the isolated West Coast.
